Heat Pumps - Ground Source and Geo Thermal

Ground Source and Geo Thermal

GROUND SOURCE & GEOTHERMAL SYSTEMS

Both ground source and geo thermal heat pumps operate by taking heat from within the ground by a network of  buried pipes. The pipework is available in a number of configerations depending upon the specific site details.

Pipe collector options:-

Geothermal probes (boreholes) - Closed loop

These systems circulate heat collection fluid around a circuit from the heat pump and down the pipes set within the borehole. This fluid extracts heat from the ground via the geothermal probes set within the borehole and brings the heat energy back to the heat pump.

Geothermal probes (boreholes) - Open loop

Ground water from an underground source is pumped up to the heat pump, the heat is extracted and the water is then piped back down onto the ground.

Ground collectors

These systems are horizontal pipework in trenches positioned to a depth of 1.5 metres below the ground. These horizontal collectors collect heat from the ground and solar gain.

Energy Piles, closed loop

This method uses the piling foundations underneath a property to extract heat from the ground by placing collection pipes within the piles which then act in the same way as the Geothermal Probes shown above.

Heat Pump Myths

“They use electrical immersion heaters to heat buildings”
Incorrectly sized systems will excessively rely on an immersion heater to provide heat. This tends to become a problem when a supplier has a limited range and is specifying a product outside of its normal operating guidance ie a small unit in a very cold location. The Green Building Site utilises the DeLongi Climaventa range because it is diverse allowing us to specify the correct product to the correct location. We have access to heat pumps that produce between 4.5KW to 1000KW.

“Ground source heat pumps freeze the ground.”
Ground source heat pumps can freeze the ground if they are incorrectly designed and installed. The Green Building Site will not specify either slinky or compact collectors due to the risk of freezing. We recommend that you are cautious of any design that does specify such a system. We will only recommend straight ground collectors or bore holes in order to maximise the efficency.
