Installing an Air Source Heat Pump is a straight forward and cost effective method of using renewable energy to heat a home. They operate by extracting heat from the outside air as low as -20^oC and operate very well in UK ambient conditions and at normal UK winter conditions the units still deliver excellent efficiency levels.

• Typical COP Ratings are 4.2 at 7^oC and 2.2 at -7^oC. COP is the coefficent of performance ie COP 2.1 is a 210% efficency.

PLANNING PERMISSION

• Air source heat pumps currently require planning permission.
  
• When standards and safeguards have been established to control noise and vibration, they are expected to become permitted development.
• If you live in a listed building or in a conservation area, you should check with your council.
• If you live in Wales, the Welsh Assembly Government announced new planning rules to encourage householders to install renewable energy equipment.

GRANTS

• Air source heat pumps are eligible for the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)
• (Phase 1)Domestic air source heat pumps installed since 15 July 2009 will be able to claim £850 /unit
• (Phase 2)The government will consult on the domestic tariffs for the RHI later in 2011, using the commercial tariff as a guide, air source heat pump rates are 7.5p/kWh for 18 years
• To qualify you must use an MCS accredited installer
• And your house must be well insulated.
• Use the Energy Saving Trust database to find grants for your local area.
