What is air tightness?
Air tightness is the sealing of unwanted and uncontrolled drafts within the structure. It can be achieved by the correct and proper installation of a vapour check or vapour barrier. The advantage of sealing up drafts is that you can control ventilation to ensure that heat loss is reduced.
For more information see the Pro Clima Brochure available in the Technical Data section. -
Why do I need air tightness?
Current regulations and codes all require air tightness to various levels. In order to achieve Passivhaus or low carbon homes standards it is essential to ensure a high level of air tightness. Tests have shown that just a 1mm wide gap 1m long in a buildings structure will reduce the insulation properties by 80% when the building is subject to a 20mph wind.
For more information see the Pro Clima Brochure available in the Technical Data section. -
How is it achieved?
Whether a masonry structure or timber frame the principal is the same. The internal face of the external walls and roof must have a continuous seal to eliminate unwanted drafts. It is achieved through the use of membranes and tapes to ensure the insulation is able to function at its optimal performance. The vapour check membrane also ensures that interstitial condensation risk is minimised, ensuring no structural damage from moisture, mould, rot and damp.
For construction details on how to achieve air tightness see the Technical Downloads in the Membrane section. -
Can I open windows
Yes, you can open windows, the principal is when you choose to close the windows the drafts is eliminated and the ventilation is controlled by a suitable system such as whole house ventilation?
Back to products
-
Which membrane do I need to choose?
The membranes are designed to satisfy set criteria. DB Plus and Intello plus are both internal membranes. Solitex Plus is an external roofing membrane and Solitex WA is used externally to protect timber frames.
-
Do the external membranes need to be airtight?
The external membranes do not need to be airtight although they do need to be wind tight. To achieve this all joints on external walls should be stapled and all roof details should be taped and any openings sealed with Tescon no.1 tape.
For further installation details please see the information Solitex Plus Brochure and the Solitex WA Details in the Technical Download section of "Membranes". -
Are all the membranes breathable?
Yes all the membranes are breathable. They are all diffusion open and allow vapour to pass through the membrane. The intelligent membranes (DB Plus and Intello Plus) also have the capability to restrict vapour and act as a vapour check when the building requires it.
For more information see the Pro Clima Brochure available in the Technical Data section. -
What is an intelligent membrane?
The intelligent membranes, (DB Plus and Intello Plus) have the ability to become more vapour (diffusion) open when required. The vapour diffusion resistance alters depending upon the relative humidity surrounding the vapour check.
In winter when the warm humid air flows from inside to out condensation can form within the structure, the membrane remains diffusion tight to resist the diffusion of vapour from the internal fabric of the building. In summer when the warm air flows from outside to inside the membrane becomes more vapour open allowing ant moisture trapped within the structure to dry out.
For more information see the Pro Clima Brochure available in the Technical Data section.

- Is it possible that mice, rats or other vermin will nest in the installed Warmcel? After all, household pets, such as hamsters, are very happy nesting in shredded paper.
- How does Warmcel compare with mineral fibre insulation on sound reduction?
-
Will Warmcel catch fire, as it's made from recycled newspaper?
Warmcel will not catch fire even if it is exposed to the direct flame of a blow torch. Flame retardants (inorganic salts) added to the insulation provide the installed Warmcel with protection against fire well beyond the statutory requirements. In fact, the product has been shown to limit damage from fire.
-
Will Warmcel corrode or embrittle PVC electric cabling?
No. Tests performed as part of BS 5803 show that Warmcel is compatible with electric cabling (no migration, discoloration and also passes the cable bend test). Also, Warmcel has a neutral pH (noncorrosive) and is non toxic.
-
Will Warmcel fall on the floor when you open the hatch? How do you prevent this?
The Green Building Site supplies a hatch-surround, which is fixed to the wooden hatch frame and holds the Warmcel in place around the hatch perimeter. Another solution is to lay boards down over the Warmcel immediately surrounding the hatch.
-
How do you insulate above the hatch door?
Warmcel can be placed into a bag and stapled to the back of the hatch door, or an alternative slab material can be used.
Back to products
-
What happens if Warmcel gets wet (e.g. burst pipe or leaking roof)?
Firstly, fix the leak. Then remove excessively wet Warmcel and re-apply with dry material already in the loft or purchase a bag of Warmcel 100 and replace as required.
-
Does Warmcel go mouldy when it gets damp?
Independent laboratory tests (performed to ASTM C739) show that no mould growth occurs when Warmcel is subjected to conditions of high humidity. Mould growth is inhibited by the inorganic salts.
-
Is it possible that mice, rats or other vermin will nest in the installed Warmcel? After all, household pets, such as hamsters, are very happy nesting in shredded paper.
The manufacturers have conducted tests with the Agricultural Development and Advisory Service (ADAS). The tests showed that mice were not attracted to Warmcel and preferred to nest and reach food through untreated material.
-
How does Warmcel compare with mineral fibre insulation on sound reduction?
Tests performed by the Sound Research Institute revealed that Warmcel has similar or better sound absorption coefficients than mineral wool and is, therefore, deemed to be a suitable alternative.
