SOLAR WATER HEATING & SOLAR ELECTRIC

Introduction to Solar Hot Water (Thermal) and Solar Electric Panels

Solar Hot Water Panels

Solar water heating (known as solar thermal) captures heat from the sun and uses it to heat up water for use in the home. Panels on your roof absorb heat from the sun, the water in the panels heats up and this hot water is pumped through a coil in your cylinder which transfers the heat to the water in the cylinder.

Solar Electric Panels

Solar Electric panels (Photovolataics) systems use cells, made up of layers of semi-conducting material which convert solar radiation into electricity. When sun light shines on the panels an electric field is created and useful electrical energy flows. An inverter converts the direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC – or mains equivalent) electricity that can be used by your home appliances. Grid connected systems can sell electricity they don’t use to the grid, and import it from the grid when there is not enough sunlight.

Cashback and Incentives

To qualify for the incentives, your solar panels, thermal or electric, must be installed by an MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) accredited installer and all equipment must also be MCS accredited. Use our postcode search to find our MCS accredited installer in your area.
