Airtightness is the key feature of any energy efficent building. It reduces wasted heat and allows the buildings atmosphere to be controlled with mechanical ventilation heat recovery units creating a healthier environment.

Passiv house airtightness levels are 10 times the current building regulations. Even with Code for Sustainable homes levels of 3 upwards, airtightness improves the efficency of the building, reducing the energy required to heat it. Heated air escaping and uncontrolled ventilation accounts for up to 50% of heat loss in buildings.

"Can I use polythene and tapes?" 

Traditional membranes are not breathable which allows moisture traped during construction or due to condensation being trapped in the structure. Such moisture not only greatly reduces any insulations thermal properties but if left it can produce mould and structural damage. The Intello Plus and DB plus membranes provides a vapour check to stop moisture entering the structure from the internal environment and yet can become vapour open releasing the trapped moisture in the structure.

Traditionally gaps would be taped and sealed. Research has shown that not only do most tapes and sealants become brittle and fail but the awkward details that are critical such as around services and openings are typically poorly sealed due to the difficult nature of working in awkward corners. The Pro Clima range has tapes, gaskets and glues which make such details straight forward. All the glues are non acrylic and non ageing to ensure an efficent system for years ahead. Wether your project is masonary or timber frame high levels of airtightness can be achieved.
